THE BASICS

What Is Equipment Leasing, and Who Can Use It?

Q

What is equipment leasing?

A financial arrangement where a business rents equipment for a specified period instead of purchasing it outright. This helps preserve CAPEX and allows for easier upgrades as technology moves on.

Q

Who can lease equipment in Europe?

Any registered business entity in the EU, including SMEs and large corporations, can lease equipment, subject to credit checks and compliance with local regulations.

Q

Who does Oak help?

Four main groups: manufacturers, suppliers, direct customers, and franchisors — each with a different route through to the same outcome, equipment funded without tying up capital.

Q

I am a direct customer, can you arrange leasing for me?

The straight answer is it might be difficult, as all funders will look at a new start quite hard. Funders examine trading experience, business plans and director support, and how easy this is varies by country.

COVERAGE & DEAL SIZE

Which Countries, What Equipment, What Size of Deal

Q

What countries can you provide leasing in?

Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland, Croatia, Czechia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Greece and Romania. Other countries are considered case by case.

Q

What amounts can you fund?

From €100,000 to €10 million per transaction (or the sterling equivalent). Smaller transactions, from €10,000, are considered only within an approved manufacturer or vendor leasing programme. For large-asset refinance and sale and leaseback, our European funding partner can go up to €100 million per transaction.

Q

What type of equipment?

Almost everything you may require, from undersea equipment in the North Sea to large production lines in Portugal and the Netherlands. We regularly fund hospitality, IT, logistics, medical and scientific, railway infrastructure, green technology, manufacturing and airport GSE equipment.

Q

Can the supplier be from a different country to where I am based?

Yes — this is straightforward for EU suppliers and typically for UK suppliers too. Export guarantee schemes may assist in certain circumstances.

30+ European countriesExclusive partnershipVector network analysers

Copper Mountain Technologies (CMT), a leading U.S.-based manufacturer of precision scientific electronic equipment used in applications as advanced as the Space Shuttle, chose Oak Leasing as its exclusive UK and European leasing partner. With a footprint spanning more than 30 European countries, CMT needed a leasing partner with deep experience in cross-border equipment finance and the agility to support complex sales cycles across diverse markets.

The partnership means European customers and distributors can now acquire CMT's cutting-edge network analysers without the burden of significant upfront investment — preserving capital and improving cash flow while accessing high-performance equipment.

“We are pleased to offer our customers and partners in Europe a way to acquire CMT network analysers without significant upfront cost. This is yet another way we extend the reach of our customers, with innovative products and great support from Oak Leasing.”

TERMS & PROCESS

Contract Length, Deposits, and How Long Approval Takes

Q

What is the typical length of a lease contract?

Normally between two and five years. With some larger equipment this can be longer, up to seven years.

Q

Do I need a large deposit or down payment?

Normally a lease will require only one to three months in advance upfront. This helps with your CAPEX budget rather than working against it.

Q

Are the lease agreements fully compliant?

Yes — all agreements are IFRS 16 compliant in the relevant countries.

Q

What happens at the end of the lease period?

For finance leases, clients typically have options to purchase the equipment for a nominal sum or upgrade to a newer model, depending on the funder and country regulations.

Q

How long does it take for an answer?

Standard UK transactions usually receive indicative terms within 48 hours. European, cross-border and larger deals get a realistic timeline at the outset. Timeline depends heavily on how complete the information is upfront.

Q

Can you arrange a sale and lease back?

Yes, this requires additional equipment information and confirmation of clear legal title before we can structure it.

PROGRAMMES & OPTIONS

Vendor Programmes, White Label, and Lease Structures

Q

Can you set up a vendor programme in Europe?

Yes — we have successfully launched numerous vendor lease programmes for suppliers and manufacturers across the continent.

Q

Is a white label finance option available in Europe?

Yes, available in certain countries — ask us about your specific markets.

Q

How do I offer leasing to our customers?

It comes down to two main factors: a good vendor programme, coupled with sales training for your relevant staff. The businesses that see the most uplift make a point of offering a lease option with every quote.

Q

Is a master lease option available?

Yes, subject to a country-by-country basis.

Q

Is SaaS financing available across Europe?

Only in certain countries, and dependent on the supplier and equipment type involved.

Q

Can you provide leasing for franchisors, and both finance and operating leases?

Yes to both — we have extensive experience arranging programmes for franchisor suppliers, and can offer finance lease and operating lease solutions, though the country-by-country interpretation of each may vary slightly.
