The Authoritative Guide to Leasing Equipment in Europe

Europe is not one leasing market. It is thirty-plus markets, each with its own tax code, accounting rules, regulator and funder appetite. A finance lease written for a German GmbH works differently from the same deal for a Portuguese sociedade anónima.

This page is Oak Leasing's working reference for arranging equipment finance across Europe: by country, by structure and by deal size — with a live calculator for indicative rentals. Everything here comes from more than three decades of cross-border transactions, not generic editorial.

Finance structures explained

The Core Lease Structures Available Across Europe

The same product name can behave differently from one market to the next. These are the structures Oak Leasing arranges, and what sets each apart.

Structure 01

Finance Lease

The lessee takes substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership.

  • On-balance-sheet under IFRS 16 / FRS 102
  • VAT charged on rentals, not the purchase price
  • Secondary period or sale at term end
Structure 02

Operating Lease

The lessor keeps meaningful residual value risk.

  • Typically lower rentals
  • Easier upgrades and refresh cycles
  • Common in technology, vehicles and AV
Structure 03

Hire Purchase

Title passes to the customer at the end, usually for a nominal option fee.

  • Ownership at term end
  • Capital allowances may sit with the customer
  • Popular with owner-managed businesses
Structure 04

Sale & Leaseback

Sell an owned asset to a funder and lease it straight back.

  • Immediate capital release
  • Uninterrupted use of the asset
  • Large-asset facilities up to €100m per transaction
Structure 05

Vendor Finance

Manufacturers and distributors offer finance at the point of sale.

  • Shorter sales cycles, larger orders
  • Funder pays the arrangement fee
  • One programme, multiple countries
Structure 06

Cross-Border & Multi-Asset

Lessee in one country, asset in another — structured as one facility.

  • Multi-jurisdiction legal structuring
  • EUR, GBP, SEK, PLN, CZK and more
  • Stage payments for European-built equipment

European Equipment Leasing Outlook 2026

Bank capital rules and credit appetite

The EU's CRR3 package, implementing the final Basel III standards, is phasing in and reshaping how bank-owned lessors price risk. The result is a widening gap between strong credits and those needing more structure — where a multi-funder panel earns its keep.

ESG-linked lease structures

Green leasing, with pricing tied to environmental performance or qualifying clean-tech assets, is moving into mainstream use in Germany, the Netherlands and the Nordics.

Industrial automation finance

Reshoring and EU investment incentives are driving demand for robotics and automation finance, supported by healthy secondary markets for the assets.

Faster technology refresh cycles

AI-capable infrastructure is shortening refresh cycles, pushing renewed demand for operating leases and flexible upgrade terms across technology and data-centre assets.

Frequently asked questions

European Equipment Leasing — Key Questions Answered

What is European equipment leasing?

European equipment leasing lets a business use machinery, technology, vehicles, medical or industrial assets without buying them outright, paying fixed rentals over an agreed term. Oak Leasing arranges these facilities across 30+ European countries through a panel of 40+ funders.

How does equipment leasing differ between European countries?

Each country has its own tax treatment, accounting conventions, regulator and legal forms of lease, such as crédit-bail in France or locação financeira in Portugal. Oak Leasing works with local-law funders in each market so the structure is correct for that jurisdiction.

What transaction sizes does Oak Leasing arrange?

Standard transactions run from €100,000 to €10 million (or GBP equivalent). Within an approved vendor leasing programme, deals from €10,000 are considered. Large-asset refinance and sale and leaseback facilities are available up to €100 million per transaction.

Who pays Oak Leasing's arrangement fee?

Oak Leasing is a funding facilitator, not a lender. Arrangement fees are typically paid by the funder when the facility is activated, not by the client or vendor.

How accurate is the Euro lease calculator?

The calculator gives an indicative rental at 6.5% APR, excluding VAT and local taxes. Your actual rate depends on credit profile, asset type, term, currency and jurisdiction, and is confirmed by the funder.

Why does the calculator stop at €500,000?

Transactions above €500,000 are structured individually, usually placed with the most suitable of several funders, residual value and currency considerations. A European Funding Director will price these directly.

Which currencies can equipment be leased in?

Facilities can be arranged in EUR, GBP, SEK, PLN, CZK and other European currencies, including multi-currency structures where the lessee and the asset sit in different countries.
